Wedding highlight film vs feature film: what’s the difference?

How long each one runs, what goes into it and how to pick the one you’ll actually watch.

When you start looking at wedding videographers, you’ll see a lot of names for the films they deliver: highlight film, feature film, teaser, full ceremony, documentary edit. It can feel like reading a menu in another language. Here’s what each one actually is, so you know what you’re paying for.

The highlight film

A highlight film is the short version of your day, usually somewhere between 3 and 8 minutes. It moves quickly, it’s set to music and it’s built around the moments that matter most: getting ready, the first time you see each other, your vows, the toasts and the party.

The best ones are more than pretty shots set to a song. They use the real audio from your day, like a line from your vows or a laugh from a toast, so the film plays like a short story about the two of you. It’s the one you’ll share with family and friends, and the one you’ll put on whenever someone asks to see your wedding.

In my collections, the highlight film runs 5 to 7 minutes in The Vow and 6 to 8 minutes in The Story and The Heirloom.

The feature film

A feature film is the longer, fuller version, usually 15 to 30 minutes. It follows your day more or less in order and gives the big moments room to breathe. You’ll hear more of your vows, more of each toast and more of the little things in between, like your dad fixing his tie or your friends singing along to the wrong words.

If the highlight film is the one you share, the feature film is the one you sit down with on your anniversary. Mine runs 15 to 20 minutes and comes with The Heirloom.

The other films you’ll hear about

Teaser

A short clip, usually about a minute long, made for social media. It’s a quick way to share your day while you wait for the full films.

Full ceremony film

Your whole ceremony from start to finish, with clean audio of your officiant, your readings and your vows. For a lot of couples, this is the film they’re most grateful to have. It comes with The Story and The Heirloom.

Full toasts and dances

Every toast and every dance in full, so nothing gets cut for time. Perfect for the speeches you’ll want to hear word for word.

Documentary edit

A long, lightly edited version of the day that keeps most of the footage in order. Not every videographer offers one. I don’t hand over raw footage, because I want everything you get to be edited, color graded and paired with good audio.

A good rule of thumb

If you’ll mostly share your film, a highlight film is plenty. If you’ll want to relive the whole day, especially the vows and toasts, add the full ceremony and toast films or go for a feature film.

Which one should you choose?

It mostly comes down to how you’ll watch it.

  • Choose a highlight film if you want something short and beautiful to share and rewatch now and then.
  • Add the full ceremony and toast films if the words matter most to you. They keep every minute of the parts people care about most.
  • Choose a feature film if you’re sentimental, if you love the idea of watching the whole day again on your anniversary or if you want something to show your kids someday.

If you’re torn, think about the toasts. If you’d be sad to hear only 15 seconds of your best friend’s speech, you’ll want the longer films.

How long they take to edit

Longer films take longer to make. Even a highlight film takes hours of choosing music, building the story and color grading, and a feature film takes a lot more than that. Ask every videographer for a real turnaround time, and make sure it’s written into your contract.

I deliver every film within six weeks, and priority editing gets them to you in four. With The Story and The Heirloom, your teaser arrives within two weeks.

Quick answers

How long is a wedding highlight film?

Usually 3 to 8 minutes. Mine run 5 to 8 minutes, depending on the collection.

How long is a wedding feature film?

Usually 15 to 30 minutes. Mine runs 15 to 20 minutes.

Is a feature film worth it?

If you’re sentimental and you’ll watch the whole day again, yes. If you mostly want something to share, a highlight film plus a full ceremony film usually covers what you need.

What’s the difference between a teaser and a highlight film?

A teaser is about a minute long and made for social media. A highlight film is the full short film of your day, usually 3 to 8 minutes.
