Barn wedding venues in Northeast Ohio

Orchard barns, historic farms and new barns built for weddings, from Lake County down to Stark County. Here’s a filmmaker’s guide to the ones worth touring.

There’s something about a barn wedding that just works in Northeast Ohio. Old wood, string lights, a field out back for the ceremony and plenty of room to dance. The area has a lot of them, from orchards near Cleveland to farms outside Akron and Canton, and they range from rustic and simple to polished and climate controlled.

I film weddings all over Northeast Ohio, and barns come with their own quirks on camera. Below are some of the barn and farm venues worth touring, grouped by area, plus a few things to ask before you book.

Before you tour

The capacities, prices and details below come from what each venue shares publicly. They change often, so always confirm current numbers and availability with the venue directly.

West and south of Cleveland

Hillcrest Orchards, Amherst

Hillcrest is a family orchard with a restored antique barn, and you can say your vows right out among the apple trees. The barn holds up to 160 guests, it has both heat and air conditioning, and if it rains, the ceremony simply moves inside.

The venue handles the catering, bartenders are included and outside alcohol isn’t allowed. Weddings run from May 1 through November 1 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and Hillcrest publishes its rental rates: $5,000 for a Friday, $6,000 for a Saturday and $4,000 for a Sunday.

Mapleside Farms, Brunswick

Mapleside has been a family apple orchard since 1927, about 30 minutes south of Cleveland. Its barn is a post and beam building of 7,250 square feet with a mezzanine, and it holds about 300 guests inside, or about 500 when you add the covered porch and outdoor space.

Ceremonies happen at The Waterfall, next to a waterfall about 80 feet tall with a covered pavilion close by. Mapleside’s own team handles the catering on site, and 2027 marks the farm’s 100th year.

Lake and Ashtabula counties

Standing Rock Farms, Madison

Standing Rock is a working farm in Madison with three event spaces, an outdoor lakefront chapel and more than a dozen places to stay on the property. The biggest space, The Flower Farm, covers 12,000 square feet and holds 300 or more guests, The Barrel Room fits about 150 and a smaller space called 1837 fits about 100.

Ceremonies happen on a lawn set aside for them, with indoor options if the weather turns. The bar is run by the venue, and the music wraps up at 10:30 pm.

Around Akron

Birdseye Barn at Western Star, Norton

If you love the barn look but want modern comforts, Birdseye is worth a visit. It’s a newer black barn with a timber interior, built on a hill that looks out over 92 acres, and it holds up to 300 guests with 250 ceremony chairs included. It has heat and air conditioning, indoor bathrooms, a bridal suite and a groom’s room.

Ceremonies happen on a patio that overlooks a meadow, you can bring your own vendors, and the barn hosts winter weddings too.

The Barn at Wolf Creek, Copley

Wolf Creek is a restored barn from the 1800s on a small country property in Copley, with room for about 150 guests. The ceremony site is surrounded by dawn redwood trees, and a covered deck is the backup if it rains. Packages include the property for 14 hours, from 10 am to midnight, so there’s no rushing through your day.

Hale Farm and Village, Bath

Hale Farm is a living history village run by the Western Reserve Historical Society, with buildings from the middle 1800s spread across 90 acres. You can marry in the little white Meetinghouse, which holds about 170, or outside in the apple orchard or on the Village Green. The Gatehouse is climate controlled and seats about 220, and the red Carriage Manufactory barn is available from June through October.

Around Canton

1885 Farms, Navarre

The barn at 1885 Farms is an octagon built in 1885, with ceilings that rise 55 feet. It sits above 50 acres and fields of flowers, holds up to 200 guests and offers five ceremony spots: the gazebo, the pines, the flower field, the lower patio and the pond.

There’s an estate house with eight bedrooms on the property for your wedding party, bartenders are included, and the farm is closed from December through March. It also publishes its prices. For 2027, Saturdays run $7,500 to $9,500.

The Mane Barn at Nickajack Farms, North Lawrence

Nickajack is a farm of 200 acres and home to a fall Pumpkin Days festival, and its wedding barn started life as a horse facility. It holds about 200 guests, and ceremonies happen in an outdoor chapel built from old barn wood.

The barn is temperature controlled with indoor bathrooms. You can bring your own caterer, and since the farm doesn’t have a liquor license, you bring your own alcohol too. Popular dates book up to two years out.

White Rose Barn, North Lawrence

Also in North Lawrence, White Rose is a white barn with a new chapel on site, heat and air conditioning, a kitchen and restrooms inside, and suites for both of you to get ready. It holds up to 250, outside vendors are welcome with no extra fees, and its 2027 and 2028 rates are posted online, starting at $3,000 for a Monday through Wednesday wedding.

Closer to Youngstown

If you’re getting married in the Mahoning Valley, My Wish Weddings Barn in New Springfield and The Barn & Gazebo in Salem are both in my guide to the best wedding venues in Youngstown.

What to ask before you book a barn

  • Is it heated and air conditioned? Some barns have both, some have heat only and some close for the winter. Many run from about May through October.
  • What’s the rain plan? Ask exactly where the ceremony moves if the weather turns, and go see that space in person.
  • Where are the restrooms? Some barns have restrooms built in, and others bring in upgraded trailers.
  • Who handles food and drinks? Some barns have their own caterer and liquor license, and others let you bring your own. That changes your budget a lot.
  • What time does the music end? Many barns wrap up the music between 10:30 and 11 pm.

Tips for a barn wedding that looks great on film

Plan around the sunset

Barns get dark fast once the sun goes down. In Cleveland, the sun sets around 8:00 pm at the end of August and closer to 6:20 pm by the end of October, so plan your outdoor ceremony and portraits while there’s still light. My guide to planning your wedding day timeline shows how.

Ask about the lighting

String lights and market lights do a lot of work in a barn after dark. Ask what the venue already has, and plan to add warm light near the head table and the dance floor if you can.

Think about sound

Big wooden rooms can echo. Make sure your DJ has a good microphone for the toasts, and let your videographer know where the speakers will be so the audio comes out clean.

Keep summer heat in mind

If your barn doesn’t have air conditioning, a July afternoon can get warm fast. Fans, cold water and an evening ceremony keep everyone comfortable, and it shows on camera.

Quick answers

When is barn wedding season in Ohio?

Most barns host weddings from about May through October. Some, like Birdseye Barn, host winter weddings too, and a few close completely from December through March.

Do barn wedding venues have air conditioning?

Some do and some don’t. Birdseye Barn, White Rose Barn and Hillcrest Orchards all list heat and air conditioning, so ask every venue you tour.

Can you bring your own alcohol to a barn wedding?

It depends on the venue’s liquor permit. Hillcrest Orchards has its own permit and doesn’t allow outside alcohol, while Nickajack Farms doesn’t have one, so couples bring their own.

Once you’ve picked your barn, take a look at my collections and pricing or check if I’m available on your date. If you’re still deciding on a season, here’s the best time to get married in Ohio.
